Samuel James Shupe
(June 19, 1858 – July 30, 1921)

From newspaper clippings in a scrapbook at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa
Samuel J. Shupe
Samuel James Shupe, son of Isaac C. and Nancy Elizabeth Shupe, was born near Lacona, Iowa, June 19, 1858, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kile, at Knoxville, Iowa, July 30, 1921, age 63 years, 1 month and 11 days. On August 7, 1881, he was united in marriage to Miss Ella Sargent, who survives his death. To this union were born six children, Mrs. Estarine Kile, of Knoxville, Iowa, Mrs. Ida Lamb of Paoni, Colorado; Mr. Archie G. Shupe of Danville, Iowa; Mrs. Glen Hess of near Indianola; Mrs. Grace Arnold of Paoni, Colorado; and Mary Frances, who died October 21, 1908. Beside his children, he leaves three brothers and two sisters; C. L. V. Shupe of Lacona; W. J. Shupe of Sutherlin, Oregon; C. O. Shupe of Waterloo; Mrs. S. B. McFarland of Liberty Center; and Mrs. Henry Davis of Melcher.
In the year of 1886, Mr. Shupe gave his heart to God, and has always been an active worker in all of the departments of the church, with life meaning to him such honesty of purpose, such joy of living, he had in complete measure all things we call worth while. Never did he question as to the future, for his faith was unshaken in a future life. It was a thing of reality and of beauty to him. Only a few days before he passed away he remarked that he was prepared for eternity, and was just waiting for God’s summons, believing so firmly in His goodness and in the justice of his decrees that there was no wavering as death drew near. He was prominent in fraternal circles, being a member of the Masonic Lodge for 40 years, taking great interest in the order. As a husband and father, he was true and loyal, loving each and every one, and there is but one way now to be true to him, and that is to wipe away all tears and meet him over there. The funeral services were held from the M. E. Church at Lacona, conducted by Rev. Clayburg, assisted by Rev. Bass, pastor of the Christina church. The body was laid to rest in the Shupe Cemetery, the Masonic order having charge of the ceremony at the grave.
