Pauline Dorothy Roe Carpenter, 102, of The Village in Indianola, died there Tuesday, February 7, 2012, after a brief struggle with cancer.

Mrs. Carpenter was born June 30, 1909 in Derby, Iowa to Thomas Carl and Ruby Roe. She was the eldest of ten siblings, including her twin, Paul, who died in infancy. After graduating from high school in Mt. Ayr, she went to work in Des Moines, and there she met her future husband, Orvalle Carpenter. They married on October 4, 1929, and were married 62 years before his death. They lived in Sonoma, CA, before returning to Iowa in the 1980s.

Mrs. Carpenter worked as a sales clerk and seamstress at Frankel Clothing Company, and for a while, at Northwestern Bell. She was known for her beautiful needlework and dozens of gorgeous quilts created for her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Order of the Eastern Star and the United Methodist Church. Her many interests included American history, reading and traveling the United States with husband, Orvalle. All who had the chance to know her appreciated her wonderfully upbeat attitude and sense of humor. She was a very fine mother, grandmother, and wife.

Mrs. Carpenter is survived by son, Kenneth (Helen) of Marble Falls, TX; brothers, Richard (Joanne) Roe of Melcher, IA and Lyle Dean (Barbara) Roe of Davis, CA. She also leaves behind: grandchildren, Sue (Curt) Haga of Eden Prairie, MN, Jan (Steve) Gulbranson of Wichita Falls, TX, Dan (Kathy) of Garland, TX, Tom (Julie) of Eugene, OR, Don (Leigh) Carpenter of Prole, IA, Karen (Mike) Phillips of Prole, IA, Craig Carpenter of Des Moines, IA, and Douglas (David Huffman) Carpenter of Indianapolis, IN; as well as dozens of great- and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orvalle; parents; son, Gerald; and seven siblings.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Village in Indianola. They were all so kind and helpful in Mrs. Carpenter's last years and days.

Visitation will be Monday, February 13 from 5-7 p.m., with a memorial service to begin at 7 p.m. at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel.
