David Edward Leih
(May 20, 1952 - March 19, 2019)

Services for David Edward Leih, 66, who passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at home, will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 25 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Hewitt Cemetery, Indianola, IA
David Edward Leih was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 20th 1952 to Edward Craft Leih and Betty Jean Duff.
David lived all his 66 years in New Virginia Iowa on his family’s farm. There was no place he would have rather been and he took great pride in sharing with his children and grandchildren the farm that he, his Dad, and his brother Bill built. Over the years he raised row crops, farrow to finish hogs, and of course cattle, which was his life-long passion. He built a respected Limousin seed stock business selling cattle across the country and even into Canada and Mexico.
He especially loved helping kids show. Enough that when his kids aged out he found neighborhood kids to help with 4-H calves until his grandkids were old enough to take over. David had cattle at the Warren County Fair every year for 56 years and participated in countless purebred Limousin shows across the country with his kids and later his forever cattle buddy and granddaughter Jamie.
Once a year he opened his beloved deer sanctuary to his favorite hunting party. It was one weekend he relaxed and enjoyed the company of friends and family that he looked forward to all year. Each one of the 8 trophy bucks hanging in his living room were “reserved” by David years before he decided it was time to join his collection. Not to mention the hundreds of shed pairs he collected over the years adorning his home.
David never met a stranger and always had time to shoot the breeze with friends. If you were lucky enough to know him, you knew there we no quick chats to be had with David. Doubly true if you could talk about cattle and at met at Subway.
David served in the United States Army and over the years he was an active member of the Warren County Cattlemen’s Association, the North America, Iowa and Heartland Limousin Associations, and spent decades as Warren County Fair breeding cattle superintendent.
David passed away Tuesday March 19th at the age of 66. Survivors include his children Bobbi (Jay) Smith, Steve (Molly) Leih, Julie (Mike) Backstrom, grandchildren Jack, Jamie and Nick Smith, and Tyler and Seth Backstrom. He was preceded in death by his father Edward Leih and brother Bill Leih. Visitation will be held 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 24 at Overton Funeral Home. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
