A Celebration of life service for Bette Grayce Graham, of Indianola, IA, who passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at The Village in Indianola, will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, December 8, in The Heritage Room at The Village, 1203 North E Street, Indianola. Inurnment of her cremains will be in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Bette was born on a rural farm house in Spring Hill, IA on August 28, 1925 to Albert and Mamie (Potts) Allen. She was a blessed to be their only daughter with three other brothers born ahead of her on a successful livestock farm.
Bette graduated from Indianola High School in 1942 and started to work for Allied Mutual as a file clerk. She went to night school and became a Filing Supervisor for 10 years.
She married her high school sweet heart in 1945, he was in the Air Force and moved to Minot, ND to live. In 1952 a joy was added to their family, they adopted a baby boy, Alan. He was 5 days old then Bette became a stay at home mom. She was delighted to see him progress in every phase of life. Bette started a new career going to school again to be a Medical Dental Hygienist. She was employed in Indianola for Dr. West for 15 years.
She met John Graham at the Methodist Church and they were married in 1968. She then added more children by adopting Jeff, Don and Janet. She emphasized the importance of vacation, being honest and friends. All four children had a high level of education. Jeff was an engineer for Intel and later became a nurse, Alan was a brick layer, Janet a nurse, and Don was a professional dancer in modern dance and later became a chiropractor. Bette was given five grandchildren to love and spoil, six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Bette and John played bridge, square danced and were snow birds and wintered in Florida for six months and summers in Iowa for six months. They had a wide and deep array of friends from Iowa to many other states. They traveled to the east coast several times. She loved family and friends and also the friends that she had made at The Village since 2014. She celebrated her 90th birthday at The Village.
She leaves her children, Alan, Jeff, Don and Janet; grandchildren, Christian, Jessica, Jack, Tom and the late Michael; great-grandchildren, Joey, Jacklyn, Xavier, Mikayla, Josh and Emily; and great-great grandchildren, Edith, Cordelia and Ember. Memorials may be given to St. Judes Children’s Hospital or the First United Methodist Church in Indianola.
