Benjamin Franklin Harvey
(August 1, 1847 – February 16, 1923)Death of B. F. Harvey – This entire community was severely shocked Friday morning when word was spread that “Grandpa” Harvey had passed away. He had been in his usual health and the evening of his death had retired apparently well. The family arising the following morning, found him lying quiet and cold. Dr. A. A. Ward was summoned at once, but found that life had flown. He had died as he lived.
Benjamin Franklin Harvey was born in Peoria, Ill., August 1, 1847 and passed from this life February 16, 1923, at Phillips, Nebr., age 75 years, 6 months and 15 days. He resided with his parents in childhood in Decatur County, Iowa. When he reached manhood, they moved to Warren County, Iowa.
He was married to Sarah E. Devore, May 20, 1869, at Milo, Warren County, Iowa. To this union were born one son and one daughter, Leslie Harvey of Phillips, who resides on the old home place one and one-half miles east of town, and Nellie Jane, who passed on before some twenty years ago.
In the year 1893 in the month of February, the family moved to Hamilton County, where he has since resided. The deceased resided on the farm for six years, then retiring to the town of Phillips where he has since resided. In April 1921 his beloved companion was called to her heavenly home. The deceased and his companion traveled together nearly fifty-two years. Since the death of his wife, his oldest granddaughter, Mrs. Earl Arnold, and two little daughters have resided with him in his home.
“Grandpa” Harvey, as he was known was loved and respected by all who knew him. His good life and pure character were revealed in his face after death. He is survived by his son, five grandchildren, Mrs. Earl Arnold, Harold Harvey of this place; Mrs. Richard Lysinger of Winner, South Dakota; Eleanor and Frank Harvey of Phillips; four great grandchildren, three brothers, John Harvey of Phillips, Sam Harvey of Rifle, Colo., Will of Oregon, and one sister, Mrs. Mattie Atkinson, of Rifle, Colo. His parents and one brother preceded him in death. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Phillips, being a consecrated Christian. He was a member of the Masonic brotherhood for more than fifty-five years.
The funeral services, following a prayer service at the house at two p.m., Sunday were held in the Methodist Church, Rev. Smith, of Juniata, a former pastor of this place, officiating. Rev. Smith was a much loved friend of the deceased. The quartet sang very impressively his favorite hymns, two of which he was heard to hum or whistle the tunes each day in the later years of his life. He will be missed in the community at large which his good life richly blessed, in the home and on the streets of the village where he was seen daily and had a cheery word or greeting for everyone he met. The church was filled with sorrowful friends who gathered to pay their last respects to one they loved. The flowers were many and beautiful. Burial was made on the family lot in the Phillips Cemetery beside his companion. The remains were carried to its last resting place by six brothers and close friends in life: F. R. Reiter, J. R. Cooper, C. W. Willman, D. Sorenson, F. C. Arnett and Wm. Arnold. A number of friend from adjoining towns were present at the funeral services. The sympathy of sorrowing friends goes out to those who mourn. The Aurora, Neb., Republican.
