David S. Sharer – Who met his death by an accident at the Indianola coal shaft, Jan. 15th, 1884, was born in Luzerne County, Pa., March 8th, 1842. When about 7 years of age he moved with his parents to Stark County, Ill. At the age of 26 he enlisted in an Illinois Regiment for 90 days; and at the expiration of this time, without returning home, he enlisted in Co. G., 177th Regiment Ohio Infantry, from which he was honorably discharged at the close of the war, June 24th, 1865, at Greensboro, N. C. He then returned to Stark County, Ill., and in 1869 was married to Miss Mary E. Neely, who, with their four children, survives him. Soon after his marriage he removed to Murray, Clarke County, Iowa, where he was engaged in farming, till his removal to Indianola, October 1879. The funeral service was conducted at the Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Sharer was a member. A large number of fellow workmen and others gathered to honor his memory. Though not a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Post of this city attended the remains of their soldier comrade to the cemetery. Mr. Sharer was a man of quiet, industrious habits, and universally respected.
