Mary Jean Brewbaker
(June 26, 1922 - July 13, 2017)

On Thursday July 13 2017 Mary Jean Brewbaker was, like her namesake, assumed into heaven. Mary was the most loving, caring and forgiving mother any of her 4 sons and husband could have ever been lucky enough to enjoy. Mary was born on June 26, 1922 south of Carlisle to Paul and Margaret (Hargis) Elgin. Mary graduated from Spring Hill High School and obtained a teaching certificate from Simpson College.
Mary taught grade school for 6 years in Stuart, Menlo and Burlington, Iowa. She and her girlfriends made a trip to the Indianapolis 500 Car Race in a model A Ford before WWII. Mary contributed to the war effort at the Des Moines Ordinance Plant in Ankeny inspecting .50 caliber ammunition. Post WWII in 1947 Mary and Howard were married at the home of her parents and she moved to Brewbaker Farm a mile west of Spring Hill for the next 70 years. Mary was active with the Spring Hill United Methodist Church, the WSCS, the Warren County Historical Society and the Spring Hill School PTA. Mary was President of the PTA during the consolidation of Spring Hill and made the heroic decision to have the Spring Hill students attend Norwalk and the rural students attend Indianola.
Mary is survived by her sons William (Cindy) Brewbaker, David Brewbaker DVM, James Brewbaker , and Paul (Connie) Brewbaker; grandchildren, Chad, Sarah, Jessica and Johnathan; sister-in-law, Kate Elgin. Mary was preceded by her husband, parents and brothers, George, Phillip and Robert.
