Mrs. David Arnold
Mrs. David Arnold died at her home on East Russell Boulevard, Chariton, Iowa, at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 10, 1937, after several months of illness, which became acute a week previous in her death. She bore her sufferings with Christian patience and the end came peacefully after all was done that loved ones and friends could do. She had reached the age of 83 years and 20 days. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. O. O. Hobson, were held at the United Brethren Church Thursday afternoon at two o’clock, and burial was in the Newbern Cemetery.
Sarah Emma Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Davis, was born in Worcester County, Maryland, on April 20, 1854. When but a child of six years she came with her parents from Maryland to Lucas County, Iowa. She received her education in Iowa public schools. In 1871 she was married to David Arnold, of Lacona, Iowa and to this union eight children were born, two of whom died in infancy, Gusta at the age of eighteen months, and Millie, at the age of five months.
For more than three-fourths of a century she had lived in Warren, Clarke and Lucas Counties, Iowa, where she had made a host of friends. David Arnold, her husband, preceded her in death six years ago. Many years ago she united with the Bethel Union Chapel near Woodburn, Iowa.
She leaves to mourn her departure six children: Mrs. Stella Ginn, of Mexico, New York; Bert and Charlmer Arnold, of Ten Sleep, Wyoming; Hal Arnold, of near Woodburn, Iowa; Mrs. Grace Wilkinson, of Indianola, Iowa; and Guy Arnold, of Chariton, Iowa; 39 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, other relatives and a great number of friends.
She was the last one of a family of nine children. She was a faithful wife, a real mother, and a loving and kind hearted grandmother, an accommodating neighbor, a friend to all in need, and she especially took a supreme interest in helping care for the sick; she believed as God’s Work teaches that “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father, is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep one’s self unspoiled from the world,” and as Jesus said, “Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of the least of these, ye did it unto Me” “And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.”
