Emma Belle Marshall
(June 18, 1860 – March 7, 1930)

[from an Indianola newspaper, March 1930, copied from a Warren County Historical Society Library scrapbook]
Emma Belle Maddock was born in Lee County [Iowa] on June 18, 1860, the daughter of William Penn Maddock and Tamar Maddock. She grew to womanhood in the community where she was born, received her schooling in local schools, and religious training in The Society of Friends of which her mother was a recorded minister. She was united in marriage to John Charles Marshall, in her parent’s home on January 3, 1879. To this union were born two children, Ernest H., who was with her at her passing and an infant daughter by whose side she was laid to rest in Salem. She passed to test the realities of her faith at 5:20 p.m., Friday, March 7, 1930, at her home in Indianola. She leaves her companion of more than fifty-one years down life’s path, and her son Ernest to mourn the loss of wife and mother, beside many nephews and nieces and true friends. Her religious training gave her a quiet, trusting faith, of strength to carry her safely through the great test to ultimate triumph. Her experiences in her life were just like those of all others. She met then with courage and determination and carried on, always. Employed at the state training school for boys at Eldora for several years, she gave to her work the very best effort, gaining the affection of many of those unfortunate lads. She will be missed and sincerely mourned and at the same time there is gladness with us that her suffering is passed and the record is closed, and will be opened in triumph when time is full.
Card of Thanks – We sincerely thank our friends for sympathy, flowers and help, in our time of bereavement. – J. Charles Marshall, Ernest H. Marshall.
