Daniel Edward Cunningham
(July 22, 1935 - November 12, 2015)

Daniel Edward Cunningham, 80, passed away November 12, 2015 in his home in Carlisle Iowa. Dan was born on July 22, 1935. Visitation will be at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church on Scotch Ridge Road in Carlisle on November 16 from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services with lunch to follow will be held at St. Elizabeth’s on Tuesday, November 17 at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa at 2:00 pm.
Dan was born and raised in Albert Lea, MN. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and was a Korean War veteran who also served in Vietnam and Japan. In 1958 he married Carol Wacholtz. Soon after, he began a 42-year career with Central Tractor – starting as warehouse worker in Albert Lea and retiring as Vice President of the used parts department in Des Moines, IA. In retirement, he worked part-time for ten years as a driver for the Business Enterprises Program at the Department for the Blind. Dan was an active member of his church community, where he was a founding member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Dan served on the church council for many years and played a major fundraising role to build the existing church. He was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus member. Dan was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was married to his wife, Carol, for 58 years. Dan is survived by his children, Annette (Jerry) Koloskie, Chris (Eric) Koglin, Dan Cunningham, Jim (Paula) Cunningham, Paulette (William) Ohnemus, Shan (Daryl) Sasser, and Patrick Cunningham, 14 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Thanks to the Hematology Oncology staff at the Iowa VA Iowa Health Care System for their care for Dan. Thanks also to the palliative care staff at the VA and Suncrest Hospice for the care and support that allowed him to remain in the comfort of his own home during his last days.
