(November 16, 1911 - March 29, 2017)

Dale R. McClintic passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at his daughter’s home in Des Moines. Funeral services for Dale will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, April 3, 2017 at the Missionary Baptist Church in Carlisle. Burial will follow services in the Carlisle Township Cemetery. A visitation will begin at 9:30 AM prior to services at the church. Dale Roland McClintic was born to L. D. and Talma Belle (East) McClintic on November 16, 1911 near Carlisle, Iowa. His father, born in Summerset, was a farmer and amateur photographer; his mother was a homemaker. Dale attended Green Castle School near his family farm east of Summerset. Dale later attended public schools in Indianola, riding the train, but left in the 11th grade to assist on the farm after his father broke a leg. Dale furthered his education by taking interstate commerce extension courses at the University of Minnesota and OSHA classes at DMACC. Dale enjoyed motor vehicles and at a young age built his own car and motorcycle from used parts. He landed a truck driving job at a Des Moines transportation company hauling shipments to Chicago. In 1940, Dale and his brother, Harold, went to Alaska where he found a job trucking heavy equipment through the mountains. Dale was drafted by the US Army but received a temporary deferment the very day he was scheduled to board a ship heading to the Pacific Theatre to fight the Japanese. During WWII, Dale spent most of his time hauling bombs and other munitions for Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. As a licensed pilot, Dale rented a plane and enjoyed flying over the Alaskan wilderness. He also had some harrowing experiences landing a ski plane for the first time and surviving a storm that capsized the fishing vessel he was on and tossed the crew and salmon catch into the sea. In 1951, Dale and his family returned to Iowa where he got a job as safety director for a couple of trucking firms. Dale had accomplished many things in his life after graduating high school. Some of those accomplishments included being a Truck driver, safety director, snowplow driver in Valdez, Alaska, chief of police in Valdez, Alaska, pilot, basketball coach and civilian contract driver for the Army (Original “Ice Road Trucker”). Dale helped build a church, he helped rescue a plane full of orphans and a nurse. Dale saved the lives of 2 Alaskan Eskimos when their boat capsized and sank in the rough ocean. Dale was a man of many hats. Dale retired at the age of 82. Dale could do anything he put his mind to and was a good Christian and the BEST dad ever. Dale is survived by one daughter, Nancy Smith of Des Moines; grandchildren, Sid, Mat, and Patrick; 8 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, L. D. and Talma Belle McClintic; first wife, Lucille and second wife Mary; siblings, Helen, Elmer, and Harold; children, Norma, Richard and Robert and grandchildren Michael Johnson and Terri Killen. Memorials for Dale may be directed to the Missionary Baptist Church in Carlisle.
