Dr. Frederick David Wertman, Jr., 91, passed away at the Urbandale Rehabilitation and Health Center, May 19, 2008. He was born in Carlisle, Iowa. Dr. Wertman was a Veterinarian and Executive Director of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Pearle Wertman. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Janet Wertman; son, Frederick David Wertman, III; daughters, Janet Niday, Carol Smith; grandchildren, Douglas Wertman, Amy Sprecher; Kimberly Slifka, Bryan Niday, Michael Smith, Karen Smith; and 8 great-grandchildren. Fred enjoyed fishing, golf, sports and reading. Dr. Wertman's achievements are as follows: graduate of Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1940; served as Executive Director and Treasurer of IVMA - 24 years; Editor, "Iowa Veterinarian" and IVMA Newsletter; Executive Secretary and Treasurer of American Association of Swine Practitioners - 8 years; Trustee, AVMA Professional Liability Insurance Trust - 8 years and Secretary - 8 years; Delegate to AVMA House of Delegates; Secretary, IVMA Foundation for Student Financial Aid; Chairman, AVMA Scientific Program Committee - 4 years; President National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners - 5 years, Member - 12 years; President and Member National Board of Health Council (International Association); Secretary and Member, Iowa Academy of Veterinary Practice; Member, Advisory Committee to the Dean of College of Veterinary Medicine, ISU - 18 years; President and Member, National Board of Veterinary Examiners - 12 years, President - 2 years; Member, U.S. Animal Health Association; U.S. Public Health Association. Memorial Services 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at First United Methodist Church, Des Moines, Iowa, with Rev. Kevin LaGree officiating. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, ISU Veterinary Scholarship Fund, Iowa Health Homecare Hospice, Urbandale; Shriner's Children's Hospital.
