(July 2, 1833 - February 19, 1915)The Advocate-Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Thurs. Feb 25, 1915, p.6
Mrs. Elizabeth Sayre Braucht
Elizabeth Sayre Braucht was born July 2, 1833 near Phillipi, West Virginia, and would have been eighty-two years old next July if she had lived to that time. The family came to Iowa by wagon train with other families. They were six weeks making the trip. She was married to Daniel Braucht December 20, 1857. Her husband had two little girls by a previous marriage, Rebecca and Alice – and these two daughters loved her as if she were their own mother, and she was all that a true and affectionate mother could be to them. She was the mother of twelve children, four of whom have preceded her to the Heavenly home. Her husband died fifteen years ago. After the death of her husband she lived with her son, Sherman, on the old homestead a couple of years. About that time her daughter, Mrs. Graham, lost her husband by death and was left with four small children. Mother Braucht at once took upon herself the responsibility of caring for these children while their mother was earning their support. Her daughter’s twin children were at once taken into her heart and loved. They were only eight months old, but for the last eleven years she has been more than a mother to them.
Eight of her own children attended her funeral services at Mitchell, South Dakota, where she died. She ministered to eighteen children and grand children and at last came to the place where she thought she could enter into the rest which God has prepared for his faithful people. She very quietly went about the task of making all arrangements to lay down her burdens and go to the dear ones gone before. In very early life Mother Braucht became a Christian and her whole life was filled with a holy ministry for the good and welfare of others. She loved the church and her classmates and was always ready to serve her Master in whatever way the opportunity came to her. During her last days her only anxiety was that she had not done enough for Him who loved her and had so gloriously saved her in her early girlhood. In addition to her surviving children, she leaves two aged sisters, Mrs. Edith Harsh and Mrs. Nancy Roach. All the rest have preceded her to the better home. Her last words were, “Rest and Peace.” A noble Christian life has come to a close and has gone to receive its high reward. Her influence will long be felt in this community and will go on forever in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was buried beside her husband and children near the dear old home that was established about sixty years ago. Her reward will be great. Funeral services were held Monday morning in the undertaking parlors of Proudfoot & Smith in the presence of a number of her loved ones and old friends and neighbors. The services were conducted by Rev. Fred Harris.
Card of Thanks – The children of Mrs. Elizabeth Braucht wish to express their sincere thanks for the sympathy and many kindnesses extended to them in the burial of their mother.
