Services for Lou Ann Richter, 94, of Indianola, who passed away May 31, 2016 at The Village in Indianola, will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 3 at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services. Lou Ann was born July 26, 1921 in Hilltop, Kansas, rural Greenwood County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlin, her parents Christian and Denna, her sisters Priscilla Schneider, Beulah Hind, Dorothy Kennedy, and brothers Earl Sauder and George Sauder. She is survived by her daughter Gwen Zierke (Sam) granddaughter Anne (Shawn) Mansfield granddaughter Carol (Peter) Grogan and son Philip Richter (Anne) grandson James Richter and granddaughter Louise Richter, sister Nellie Hetherington and brother Harold Sauder, four great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. She married Marlin Richter on October 13, 1940. They moved to Indianola, Iowa in 1947.
She will be remembered as a community volunteer and a kind-hearted woman of faith. She was active in many local organizations including the Reach to Recovery Program of the American Cancer Society, the Trinity Presbyterian Church where she served as deacon and on the Church Renovation Committee, Meals on Wheels which she helped organize and deliver meals, the FISH program, which provides transportation to the elderly, on which she served for over 20 years, the Sisterhood of PEO where she served as an officer and the Helping Hand. She was recognized by then First Lady Hillary Clinton in Washington D.C in 1995 to represent mothers and grandmothers nationally for breast cancer awareness. She was a recipient of the Hardee’s Hometown Hero Award for her volunteer service, which was presented to her by Governor Branstad on May 14, 1997. In January of 1998, Simpson College presented her with its Achievement Award for Distinguished Community Service.
She loved to travel, and took many trips with Peoples Bank and the Elderhostel International organization. She travelled extensively throughout the United States, and internationally, and took several cruises with her family. Her hobbies included china painting and quilting; she completed a quilt for each child and grandchild. She may be best remembered for her joy in hospitality and her friendship to others.
