David Barr Yates
(December 26, 1920 - January 7, 2017)

Services for David Yates, 96, who passed away peacefully Saturday, January 7, 2017 will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 10 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.
David was born December 26th 1920 in Grinnell, Iowa to David and Grace Yates. David graduated from East High School in 1939 and then attended Drake University. He joined the United States Army in 1944 and severed in World War II. On September 17, 1953 David and Berline Thorn were united in marriage. David was employed with Rock Island Railroad as a train dispatcher from 1948 until his retirement in 1979.
David was an active member of NARVE, VFW Post 4123, American Legion 165, Masonic Lodge 53 Indianola, South Gate Eastern Star, and the ARABA Shrine. He volunteered with Mended Hearts, Health Park Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida, and an Energetic Musician with his local church and community. David’s favorite music memory was touring with a dance band in Plattsburg, New York.
Survivors include his daughters, Janet (Brian) Goode and Melanie Yates; three grandchildren, Bradley Goode, Brett Goode and Beth Ann Weber; eight great-grandchildren Austin, Katelynn, Tyler, Emily, Lucas, Josie, Karly and Meredith. He was preceded in death by his parents David and Grace Yates and his wife, Burline Yates.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Temple of God Church or the Indianola Good Samaritan Society in Indianola.
