Joseph William Martin
(September 21, 1962 - February 3, 2017)

Services for Joseph William Martin, 54, who passed away Friday, February 3, 2017, will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 9 at the First Assembly of God Church in Indianola with visitation held one hour prior to service. Joe, son of William Martin and Ilene (Montgomery) Baker, was born in Kirksville, MO on September 21, 1962. At the age of 12 Joe moved to New Virginia to the farm that became known as Bakers Acres and spent most of his life living there. Joe graduated from Interstate 35 High School in 1980. After high school, Joe worked for Hawbaker Construction, John’s Auto Sales, and in 1991 Joe began his apprenticeship in plumbing and was a Journeyman with Baker Group Local #33 Plumbers and Steamfitters for the last 26 years.
Joe, and the love of his life Kelly Kohrs, had one son Spencer Lee Martin. Joe loved being a father and teaching his son Spencer and his friends about hunting, fishing, and working on trucks. Joe was blessed with a grandson Blake Hunter Martin and enjoyed every second they spent together. Joe, Spencer, and Blake had a special bond that will be greatly missed.
Joe’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes, gardening, mushroom hunting, and of course drinking beer and driving through hayfields late at night. One of Joe’s proudest moments was getting 1st place at the Macksburg National Skillet Throw Championship.
Survivors include his son, Spencer Martin and grandson, Blake Martin of New Virginia; mother, Ilene Baker; best friend and soul mate, Kelly Kohrs and her son Justice Huston; brothers, Randy (Randi) Martin, Laguna Hills, CA, James (Jill) Baker, Glenwood, IA, Larry (Laura) Martin, Waterloo, IA; sisters, Lisa Beebe, Indianola, IA, Lori (Marty) Meador, Indianola, IA, Alesia Trask, Colfax, IA, Sherri (Jori) Wilkie, Hubbard, IA; and many nieces and nephews and a circle of good friends. He is preceded in death by his father, William Martin; step-father, James Baker; sister, Carla Baker.
