Rebecca Merryman
(Sept 12, 1809 - Dec 2, 1892)

Indianola Weekly Herald, Indianola, Iowa, Thursday, Nov 3, 1892, p.3
We made a call upon old lady Merryman of Lothrop a few days ago, she being born in Ireland in the year 1809, she came to this country at an early age; is now a widow of a soldier of the war of 1812, of course Uncle Sam pays her 14 ½ dollars a year pension. We found her in general health for a lady of her age although quite hard of hearing and her memory somewhat tarnished, yet she talks of the past and remembers many things that transpired in the days of her childhood much more perfect than things that took place of recent date. We will write more particular of her life in the future.

Obituary
Miss Rebecca Watson was born in Ireland on the 12th day of Oct. 1809. She came to this country at the age of eight years, with her parents, settled near Georgetown, VA, afterwards we understand moved to Fairfax, Va. She was married to Samuel Merryman June 26th, 1827, at the age of 18 years. Mr. Merryman was a soldier during the war of 1812 having enlisted in a Maryland regiment and served during the war. After the close of the war and after his marriage they moved to Missouri, this was in 1846 – sixteen years from the date of marriage. During the fall of 1865 Mrs. Merryman having been left a widow, moved to Iowa and settled in this county and in the neighborhood where she died Friday, Dec 2, 1892, and was buried in the Linn Grove cemetery Sabbath Dec. 4th. The writer became acquainted with her and her family soon after their arrival in this county, but is not informed what year her husband departed this life. She was the mother of 12 children; three boys and nine girls. One son and seven daughter, perhaps eight, survive her. She has been drawing a pension as widow the war of 1812 for several years, which has been her main support. We have known grandma Marryman for the last 27 years, always found her to be a consistant Christian in all her ways. She has always been the same Grandma Marryman. She has been a member of the M. E. church at Linn Grove from her first coming here. Her friends and neighbors were numerous, every one spoke well of her. She lived a long and eventful life. Her membory had failed her very much during the last year. She has gone and let us try to meet her in the better land. L.S.S.
