Alfred "Al" Polito, Sr., 81 years 10 months, of Hartford, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa.

Alfred Joe Polito, Sr, was born March 11, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, to Frank and Stella (Olmsted) Polito. He grew up working with his father in the auto body repair service beginning at 12 years of age and continued in his own garage throughout his life.

Al proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps going to war from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict.

Returning home, he met and married Marilyn June Lester of Chicago, Illinois, on January 25, 1957. They began their new life together and were blessed with five children. They decided to move to Iowa to raise their family outside of the big city.

Moving first to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1966, they found the perfect place in 1968 resting southeast of the city in the town of Hartford, Iowa, that they would call home for 45 years. Al worked at AMF Western Tool from 1966 until he retired in 1987.

Al enjoyed working in his garage, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, attending car shows, traveling, and spending time with his family. He had a great sense of humor, a contagious smile, and was gentle and kind to everyone he met. He never knew a stranger!

Surviving Al are his wife, Marilyn, his children, Alfred, Jr. (Linda) of Monticello, IA, Charles (Gerri) of Hartford, IA, Dominick (Jo Marie) of Isle, MN, Lewis (Ann) of Hartford, IA, and Lucinda of Hartford, IA; his grandchildren, Josiah Polito of Manchester, IA, Blythe Polito of Rochester, MN, Chad (Hannah) Polito of Downsville, LA, Matthew (Sally) Polito of Des Moines, IA; Jessica (Anders) Kullhem of Willmar, MN, Amanda Polito of Isle, MN, Megan (Dustin) Beyer of Hudson, SD, Trevor Polito of Hartford, IA, Brandon Polito of Breckenridge, CO, Abbigayle & Blake Durrell of Hartford, IA; and his great grandson, Greyson Polito of Downsville, LA.

Preceding Al in death were his parents; step-mother, Jean Polito, his sisters, Irene Polito and Mary Fetting, his half sister, Gail Polito, and his brother, Franklin Polito.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Community United Presbyterian Church in Hartford, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with service beginning at 1:00 p.m. including military honors.
