Father Young Died Sunday
While the report that Father Young had died early Sunday morning did not cause much surprise the news was none the less sad. He was a man who had no enemies. John Young was born in England in the year 1822, and continued to reside there until 1848 when he with his wife, whom he married in 1845, came to America, locating in northern Iowa. Four children were born unto them, three of whom are still living, their son Robert being a resident of Indianola, and two daughters who reside in the west. His wife died in 1863 and in 1866 he was again married to Mrs. Jane Froome, of Rockford, Ill., who with their son, Fred C. Young, survives. Father Young enlisted for the thirty day service, and afterwards enlisted with his son, Robert, in the 6th cavalry and served until the close of the war. He was a favorite with his army comrades and had served Jas. Randolph post G.A.R. as chaplain since 1888. At their recent election he was again unanimously chosen as chaplain, and being unable to attend the meeting his old comrades went in a body to his home to inform him of their work. It was a position he prized very highly and filled it with honor to himself and to the post. Father Young located with his family in Indianola late in the 70’s [1870s], and with his son, Robert, conducted a meat market on the south side of the square. He was honorable in his dealings; genial, polite, affable. He has been feeble for a number of years, yet he was a familiar figure about town during pleasant weather. The funeral was held Tuesday in the M.E. church, of which he was a faithful member, conducted by his pastor, Rev. G. W. L. Brown. On account of the extreme cold weather the members of Jas. Randolph post conducted their ritualistic services at the church instead of at the cemetery as is their usual custom. Father Young’s many friends deeply sympathize with the bereaved family.
