Mrs. Martha M. Ross
Martha Mehaffey was born in Guernsey county near Cambridge, Ohio, April 22, 1844, and entered peacefully into rest December 30th, 1922 at her home in Indianola, Iowa at the age of seventy-eight years, eight months and seven days. In early life she unitedwith the Lebanon United Presbyterian church of Guernsey county, Ohio, under the pastorate of Dr. James Duncan. On September 6, 1865, she was married to John P. Ross, who had just finished four years service for his country. A few years later Mr. and Mrs. Ross came west, and located on a farm near Albia. About 1883 they removed to South Dakota, near Bonilla, taking a claim there, and enduring the hardships of pioneer life for several years. In March, 1888 they moved to Indianola, Iowa.
Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ross: James D. and Clara Alta Shaw. The family circle was first broken in January, 1908, when Mrs. Ross was taken and again two years later when the son died. Mrs. Ross leaves two older brothers, James and Samuel Mehaffey of Cambridge, Ohio, the daughter, Alta Shaw with whom she has made her home for more than a year, and the son’s family, Mrs. James Ross, and two children, Floyd and Marie of Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. Ross was a life-long worker in the church, and for many years taught a class in the Sabbath school, giving up her class because of failing health. As long as she was able she was in her place and took a deep interest in all church work.

Death doth hide, but not divide. Thou are but on Christ’s other side. Thou art with Christ and Christ with me, in Christ united still are we.”
