Elijah Byers
(Feb 6, 1829 - July 11, 1896)

The community was shocked to learn that while engaged in cutting a bee tree, Elijah Byers, had met with a serious accident which resulted in his death shortly afterwards. We beard a confused story of the accident, out not clearly enough to give any particulars. Death is always a herald of sadness, but it seems under such circumstances it is doubly distressing, and to say we deeply sympathize with the bereaved ones sounds like hollow mockery. We know well how it is to watch loved ones ushered from this earth to that bourne from whence no traveler returns. The funeral was held at Hammondsburg, conducted by Rev. C. S. Fair. A large and sympathizing crowd listened to the eloquent and beautiful funeral discourse after which he was laid to rest.
