Merrill McElwee passed away Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 78, surrounded by his loving family.
Merrill was born on October 20, 1937 to John and Helen (Rodgers) McElwee in rural Warren County. After graduating from Dallas High School, Merrill joined the United States Army, serving two years in Germany. During this time he met the love of his life, Sonny (Van Der Heide) in Hilversum, Holland, where they were united in marriage in 1961. To this union two daughters were born. Merrill and Sonny made their home on a farm in Pleasantville where Merrill farmed the rest of his life. Merrill was a proud member of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, hunting and his bowling league. In his later years, he loved going to Lakeside Casino, spending time on his computer and most of all, spending time with his family.
Merrill was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife Sonny. He is survived by his daughters, Marja (Mike) Kieliger of Pleasantville and Conny (Denny) Brown of Indianola; brother, Donald (Darlene) McElwee; sister, Carolyn Watts; grandchildren, Joe Brown, Josh Kieliger, Erika (Matt Johnson) Kieliger; and great-grandchildren, Trenton and Chloe. We will forever miss his quick wit, humor and endless conversations.
In accordance with his wishes, a private family graveside service will be held. Burial with full military rites will be in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Indianola.
