Services for Opal Fridley Wonderlin, 81, who passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016 will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 16 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with visitation prior to services starting at 9 a.m. Burial will be in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Flora Opal Scholl was born the daughter of Arthur and Valeta (Howell) Scholl, December 13, 1934 on a farm in Clarke County near Murray, Iowa. She joined four older brothers: John, Ernie, William and Clarence. Always known as Opal, she grew up in Clarke County and graduated from Osceola High School in 1953.
Opal married William (Bill) Fridley on May 9, 1953 at Fremont, Iowa. They began their lives together on the farm at Cool, south of Indianola in Warren County. They had three daughters: Diane, Brenda and Berta. Opal worked with Bill in farming, putting up grain bins with their Stormor bin business and owning and operating Fridley Farm Supply on the west side of Indianola starting in 1972. During that time she also spent much time in service for Jesus and her community at her church, Fairview Christian Union.
Later Opal worked in housekeeping and activities at Good Samaritan Center in Indianola. During that time, on September 26, 1981, Bill passed while working on the farm. On January 6, 1984 Opal married Henry Wonderlin and moved to his farm near St. Charles. They lived there for over 12 years before moving to Indianola. Opal was well known for her willingness to help friends and neighbors, her sense of humor and her love of painting scenery on saw blades. She was a tremendous gardener and shared produce with her friends and neighbors.
Opal spent her last three years residing at Vintage Hills Assisted Living in Indianola with her beloved dog, Missy. She moved onto Heaven and into the arms of her Jesus on January 12, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Valeta Scholl, her brothers : John, Ernie and William, and her husbands Bill Fridley and Henry Wonderlin. She is survived by her brother Clarence Scholl of Osceola, three daughters: Diane (Kelly) Clevenger, Brenda ( Les ) Gavin and Berta (Rod) Heemstra, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Fairview Community Church or Vintage Hills Retirement Center in Opal’s name.
