A Celebration of Life service for Joseph Allen Pullen, 88, who passed away, Saturday, November 14, 2015 at home, will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 19 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, IA. A graveside burial of cremains will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, November 21 at the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery with military rites.
Joseph is survived by his companion, Daisy Maddy; Daisy’s children, Diana (Roger) Partlow, Darcy (Greg) Livingston, Deb (Erin) Clements; 9 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; Joseph’s daughters, Rose (Dick) Grangaard, Sue (Kyle) Curtis; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 16 nieces and nephews; sister Norma Barger of Cleveland, GA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Pullen and their son Timothy Allen Pullen; sisters, Irene Hall and Shirley Coronado and brother, Carroll Pullen.
Joseph was born August 8, 1927 in Essex, IA to Alonzo and Gladys (Nordyke) Pullen. He completed his education in Indianola, IA.
He served in the United States Navy following High School aboard the USS Kalinin Bay as a machinist 3rd class in the engine room. He served in WWII and later attended many Navy reunions. He was a welder by trade along with his grandson, Joseph who has followed in his footsteps.
He loved playing golf with friends. He traveled to California with Ruthie and took his children camping. At the age of 80 he rode his trike to California then to Texas and back home. He belonged to the shrine “Zagaza” for 20 years and played in the oriental band. He also belonged to the American Legion for 60 years.
In his later years he and Daisy spent living their days to the fullest and enjoying each other sharing many adventures.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, November 18 at Overton Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the the American Legion Post #165.
