Services for Dwayne A. Barton, 71, who passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at home, will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 10 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Humeston Cemetery, Humeston, IA.
Dwayne was born on August 20, 1944 in Des Moines to Dwight E. and Edith Carol (Wicks) Barton. He graduated from Dallas Center High School in 1962 and from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1966 where he wrestled, played football, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He earned a Master's degree from Drake University.
A teaching career at West Burlington and Carlisle High Schools brought great joy to him. He touched the lives of a multitude of students and and every one of them created a special memory to him. Challenging students to achieve their greatest potential was his passion.
While at Carlisle High School, he and Mike Leo developed a lifelong friendship, and thus the beginning of the infamous Tall Dog Bike Club.
On June 8, 1985 he and Cynthia Johnson were united in marriage.
His son John and daughter J. Michelle brought great joy to his life as well as his grandchildren Elizabeth, Seth, Jack, and Kate.
Dwayne's bicycle ride from the state of Washington to the state of Maine in 2002 created many happy memories and interesting stories.
Upon retiring from a teaching career he played an active role at Humeston Livestock Auction.
Dwayne's survivors include his wife Cynthia, son John (Hannah) Barton, daughter J. Michelle (Matt) Plaveczky, grandchildren Elizabeth and Seth Barton and Jack and Kate Plaveczky, brother Dwight (Marilyn) Barton, aunt, Helen Dawes and uncle, Ivan Knoll, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and a multitude of friends.
Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 9 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given in Dwayne’s name to Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola or The Des Moines Register’s RAGBRAI “Dream Team”.
