Former Indianola resident Mary Claudia Hooper, 81, died of natural causes on July 22, 2015 at her home in Laguna Vista, Texas.
A Celebration of Life visitation will be held Thursday, July 30, 2015 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the South Padre Island Golf Club House at Laguna Vista, TX. Memorials may be given in Mary’s name to the First United Methodist Church to be used on landscaping. A Celebration of Life visitation is planned at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Indianola, Iowa followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m.
Mary Claudia Hooper was born to Claude and Elsie Unger in Des Moines, Iowa on July 17, 1934. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1952. She also attended Winona State Teacher’s College in Minnesota.
Mary Unger married LaVerne Hooper on February 9, 1957 and they resided in Indianola. In 1975 they purchased a second home on South Padre Island and became winter Texans, and after a time, permanent residents. For most of their marriage, they resided at 900 West Detroit in Indianola until 1973 when they built a home in the country.
Verne passed away in Texas in 1997. Mary lived with her life partner Bob Kalsted, for 15 years until her death.
She worked at Boeing, the Credit Union in Indianola and later served as Vice President and bookkeeper of Hooper Trenching. She was active in the Ackworth Garden Club and Driftwood Garden Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Port Isabel, Texas. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, Mexican Train, bird watching, gardening, quilting, aqua size, and her friends at SPINS.
She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her beautiful smile and her love of life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Elsie Unger; her son, Kelly; her husband, LaVerne; and her two sisters, Barb Battina and Mildred Genovese.
She is survived by Bob Kalsted, his daughters Diane and Janis Mackey (Chuck) and their children Sarah, Samantha, and Steven. She is also survived by her sister, Marjorie Riglin of Ackley, Iowa; step-daughter, Roni West (Indianola); daughters, Claudia Golterman (Hartwell, Georgia), Kay Hooper (Spencer, Iowa), and Karin Hooper (Indianola); grandsons, Benjamin Kelly Weir and Jamie Howard; and granddaughters, Jodi Howard and Juli Cambron; and many, many friends.
When one of her friends in Texas heard that she died peacefully in her sleep, she shouted to the sky "Well done, Mary!" Well done, indeed.
