Eulalia Pauline Holmquist, 95, the daughter of James Christopher and Nora Mae (Edelman) McCormick, was born March 4, 1918, in Oakley, IA. She was a graduate of the Chariton Senior High, Class of 1935. Eulalia attended Chariton Jr. College, (UNI)-Iowa State Teachers College, and later graduated from Cosmetology School in Ottumwa. She taught at rural schools in Lucas County. She later worked at Botkins Barber Shop in Indianola. Eulalia served her country during World War II, with the US Marine Corps. While in the Marines, she graduated from the Motion Picture Technician's School.
On June 7, 1947, Eulalia was united in marriage with Paul G. Holmquist in Bakersfield, CA. In 1954, she and Paul moved to the Newton area. She worked as a beautician in Centerville and Des Moines, and owned and operated Eulalia's Beauty Nook in Newton. She retired in 1997. Eulalia devoted her life to her husband and family. She was a member of the Newton First United Methodist Church. Eulalia enjoyed swimming, sewing, cooking and gardening.
Eulalia died Friday, May 24, 2013, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton under the care of Skiff Hospice. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; and thirteen brothers and sisters.
Those left to honor Eulalia's memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda P. Holmquist and Dr. Norman Klocke of Topeka, KS; her son, Calvin C. Holmquist of Newton; her sisters and brother: Leola Mikesell of Oakley, Kenneth McCormick of Norwood and Lois Akins of Knoxville; and her numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for Eulalia, will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday morning. Interment will be in the Veteran's Section at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials have been designated to First United Methodist Church, Newton Library, Skiff Hospice, Newton Y.M.C.A. or in Eulalia's name.
