Memorial services for Betty Jane Richards of Pleasantville will be held on Thursday at the Mason Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Burial of the ashes will be in the Pleasantville Cemetery at a later date.

Betty Jane Richards was born on July 13, 1923 in Beech, Iowa, the daughter of Walter Samuel Sterling and Celesta Faith (Crane) Sterling.

Betty attended Elementary School in Indianola and High School in Pleasantville, graduating with the class of 1941. She was united in marriage to Darrel Doren Mosher in Albuquerque, NM on March 21, 1942. Betty was later united in marriage to Thomas Duane "Hoot" Richards on January 21, 1951 in Pleasantville. Hoot and Betty lived on a farm outside of Pleasantville for over 50 years before moving to town in 2001.

During WWII, Betty worked as a Civil Service Clerk from 1944 to 1945. She then went on to work at the ASCS office in Knoxville and then later in Des Moines. Betty had been a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church from the age of 9. She was also a member of the Jolly Kimball Club and the Pythian Sisters.

Betty passed away on Monday, May 9, 2011 at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 26 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first and second husbands; brothers, Billy Sterling, Vance Sterling; sisters, Irene Sterling Nelson and Bess Sterling Dotson.

She is survived by her children, Gary (Juanita) Mosher of Pleasantville, Craig Richards of Des Moines and Jocelyn Richards of Pleasantville; grandchildren, Letitia (Erv) Kopp, Celesta (Bill) Moore, Nicholas Mosher, Joel Richards, Tom (Marcy) Roff, Danielle Roff and 5 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the Mason Funeral Home.
