Services for Sonny McElwee, 74, who passed Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, following a tragic auto accident, will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, February 17 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Indianola.

Born in Hilversum, Holland, Sonny met her husband, Merrill when he was serving in the United States Army in Germany. Following his discharge, Merrill returned to the United States for a year then went back to Holland. Sonny and Merrill were united in marriage on February 1, 1961, before moving to the United States where they made their home in the Pleasantville Farming Community. Sonny worked at Pleasant Care in Pleasantville for 45 years, retiring in 2012. She enjoyed working in her garden, entertaining, decorating and shopping, but most of all she loved her family and life.

She is survived by her husband, Merrill; two daughters, Marja (Mike) Kieliger of Pleasantville and Conny (Denny) Brown of Indianola; two brothers, Bill and Dowa VanderHiede; four sisters, Sue Peterson, Janneke Warmerdam, Ineke Vandyken and Marja VanderHiede; three grandchildren, Joe Brown, Josh Kieliger and Erika Kieliger; and two great-grandchildren, Trenton Kieliger and Chloe Johnson.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at Overton Funeral Home, where family will be present to greet friends. Memorials may be given to the family in her name for a memorial to be decided at a later date. Online condolences may be made at www.overtonfunerals.com .
