Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 4-6-2011:

Donald Alen. Hill, 86, passed away peacefully at Kavanagh House on April 3, 2011.

He was born to Ester and Harvey Hill in Des Moines on March 25, 1925. Don lived in Des Moines his entire life graduating from North High where he excelled in sports and art. He served his country in World War II as a member of the Merchant Marines.

He married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Glasgow on October 27, 1944. They had four children, Michael, David, Donna and Janet.

After the war, Don attended the Cummings School of Art in Des Moines. In 1951, he began a 31 year career at John Deere in Ankeny, Iowa. He utilized his artistic, and innovative skills first as a draftsman and then as Quality Assurance Manager.

Don was a scratch golfer, and donated his time to mentor junior golfers at Hyperion Golf and Country Club. His family was always first on his mind and will be greatly missed by all of those that had the pleasure to know him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sons, Michael and David. He is survived by his wife, Wanda; and daughters, Donna Dickerson and Janet Calhoun; daughters-in law, Barbara and Julie Hill; grandchildren, Micah (Sachin) Saste, Jason (Katie) Hill, Charles (Julie) Hill, Esther Hill, and Danielle Hill; great-grandchildren, Lillian and Hendrik Hill and Michael Saste.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Memorial Service Friday, April 8 at 1 p.m. at Iles Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Children and Family Urban Ministries at 1548 8th St., Des Moines, Iowa 50314
