Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 5-11-2008:

Memorial services for Jerry Fortune, 76, will be Monday, May 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Jerry was an Ironworker and belonged to the Ironworkers Local 67 for many years. He was also a Deputy Sherriff in Marion County for ten years and worked with the Marion County Road Department for several years. He was a Navy Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict in the Marshall Islands and was a 55 year member of the American Legion.

He had lived on the home place since he was a born and took pride in caring for his farm. He also enjoyed traveling and wintering in Texas for several years. Jerry and Joyce's children and grandchildren were very special to him. He was a very giving and patient person and will be missed greatly by his family.

Jerry passed away Friday, May 9, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents: Claude and Mayme Fortune; a daughter Carleen Mason; and a sister Betty Roberts.

Jerry is survived by his wife Joyce of Melcher-Dallas; children: Allen Farrell of Knoxville, Marina Weis of Lacona, Linda (Joe) Snook of Melcher-Dallas, and Mike Farrell of Birmingham, Alabama; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings: Jim Fortune of Montezuma, Jack Fortune of Pleasant Hill, Carolyn Carroll of Weldon, and Joy Jackson of Weldon; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
