Jean (Valory Jean Atherton) Eaton passed away at The Village on October 29, 2011, at the age of 98. She was born at home in Dexter, Iowa on November 6, 1912, to parents Claude and Marguerite Stewart Atherton. In 1931, she graduated from Dexter High School and furthered her education in Morris, Illinois where she completed her nurses training, graduating as a Registered Nurse.

On October 28, 1937, she was united in marriage to Robert Wilber Eaton. They made their home in Des Moines where she worked for various doctors and as a county nurse. She also attended art classes, which proved to be valuable to her throughout the years. The family moved to Indianola in 1948 when Bob and Jean purchased a photography studio. Eaton's Studio was located on the Indianola square where Jean assisted in all areas of the business.

Survivors include her two daughters, Nancy DeLay and Sidney Kirkpatrick and husband Gary; four grandsons, Jason (Kim) DeLay, Jerod (Sarah) DeLay, Chad (Sara) Kirkpatrick and Craig (Natalie) Kirkpatrick; ten great-grandchildren, Jake, Connor, Clay, Ashley, Jensen, Cade, Coy, Justin, Isabel and Adalyn. She also is survived by a host of friends and relatives who lovingly called her "Mother Eaton."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob" Eaton; her parents; sister, Claudia; brother, Allen and his wife Marie; and son-in-law, Jerry DeLay.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F.
