Leota (Higdon) Houlette passed away September 20, 2009 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Indianola, Iowa. She was 88 years old.

Leota was born June 17, 1921 to Alva P. and Wilma V. (Gillett) Higdon. She was a life long resident of Warren County. She was a 1938 graduate of St. Marys High School. On February 16, 1939 she was united in marriage to Marshall P. Houlette of New Virginia.

Leota was an active member of the New Virginia Christian Church, having been baptized into Christ on October 9, 1963.

She loved gardening, making quilts, and in later years became interested in family history and New Virginia history.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend to many.

Leota is survived by daughters Betty Kaldenberg (Jim) of Indianola and Marilyn Jones (Danny) of New Virginia, ten grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 21 great great grandchildren, sisters Verna Street (Roy) of Pelham, GA and Elnora McCoy (Larry) of Urbandale, brother Richard Higdon (Marilyn) of Clarendon Hills, IL and other relatives and many friends

Funeral services will be at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 1 p.m. . Interment will follow in the New Virginia Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa in Knoxville or a charity of choice.
