Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 4-2-2004:

Mrs. Janet Gehringer Shutt, 67, died of inflammatory breast cancer March 31, 2004 at home with her family and Middle River Hospice by her side. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys, with Father Dan Krettek officiating. Burial will be in the St. Marys Cemetery.

Janet was a lifelong resident of St. Marys, where she was the former owner of Northside Tavern and had served as mayor for 15 years. She also worked for Dahl's food stores and helped run the Shutt Garden Center with her husband, Garon. Janet was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and really enjoyed organizing events and fund-raisers around St. Marys.

She is survived by her husband, Garon Shutt; sons, Chuck (Margie) Gehringer, Marty (Christie) Gehringer, Chris (Mia) Gehringer and James (Barb) Shutt; daughters, Theresa Gehringer Smith, Maria Gehringer and Tina Gehringer-Minor (Patrick); 14 grandchildren; twin brother, John (Karen) Wilgenbusch; and sisters, Charlotte (Maurice) Gehringer, Donna (Ted) McClure, Kathie (Jerome) Lippold, Nadine (Bob) Doughty, Marietta (Gary) Linnenkamp, Lynda Wilgenbusch and Sheila Oberenden (Ed Fallis). She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lester "Doc" Gehringer; grandson, Tom Gehringer; and second husband, Mert Sawyer.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 2 at St. Marys Hall, where a prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or Middle River Hospice of Madison County.
