Winterset Madisonian – July 10, 1912
Winterset, Iowa

The many friends of Rev. Matheny were saddened by the news of his sudden death on Saturday morning, at his home in Nevada. He had been on the streets in usual good health on Friday. About ten o’clock that evening an attack of neuralgia of the heart caused the summoning of a physician. He recovered from that spell, but a second attack at 7:30 on Saturday morning, caused his death.

The funeral was to be held this morning from the local church and interment made in Indianola. For over thirty six years, Rev. Matheny had been engaged in religious work.

Born in Appanoose county, Sept. 11, 1856, he entered the ministry at the early age of twenty years and has been the means of the erection of many churches and parsonages and the instrument of hundreds of conversions in the seventeen charges he has occupied. While pastor at Winterset, 1902 – 1906, he gained many friends, who were pleased to learn that he had recently negotiated for a farm in this county, that he might make this his home. He had made two visits recently to the city. He was a man highly esteemed, now greatly lamented.

Note: Burial was made in the IOOF cemetery, Indianola, Iowa.
