Bernice was born October 25, 1913 near Derby, Iowa. She was the daughter of Bert and Carmie (Swainey) Snook. After graduating from Sewal High School she attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. Bernice taught school in Winterset, Cambria, Chariton and a few rural schools.

In 1939 Bernice married Keith A. Goode of Lacona. They began their married life on a farm near Derby and later moved to the farm south of Lacona. In the mid-forties the family moved into the house in Lacona, which has been the family home.

Bernice was a helpmate to Keith, homemaker, substitute teacher, and mother to Sue Ellen, Bob, Lisle, and Linda. She enjoyed playing bridge with the Lacona bridge club for many years. For over 40 years she was the pianist at the United Methodist Church. She was active in United Methodist Women and for many years was the treasurer of her church. Her crocheted doilies were sought after by those who knew her work.

Bernice is survived by her children, Sue Ellen (Rev. Bill) Ballard, Lisle (Diane) Goode, Linda Goode and her daughter-in-law Janice Goode. Also surviving are grandchildren, Bill K., Steve (Jennifer) and John (Jodi) Ballard; Laura (Mike) Tobey, Tim (Corinne) Goode, Sarah Hobart, Mike (Deanna) Hobart; Matt and Greg Goode. Her great grandchildren are Lindsey, Marty, Jack, Ellie, Maggie and Georgia Ballard; Andrew Tobey; Brian and Rob Goode; Vicki, Stasi and Alei Smith and great-great grandchildren, Maggie Hindley and Hunter Holdsworth. She is also survived by her step sister-in-law Glenys Mitchell, several cousins and many friends.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Eldon; husband Keith, son Bob; stepmother Bonnie Snook and stepbrother and sister, Warren Mitchell and Marion Barger.

Memorials may be made to the Lacona United Methodist Church or the Lacona Fire and Rescue Department.

The celebration of the life of Bernice G. Snook Goode, 96, will be held Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 11:15 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lacona, IA. Visitation will be held Monday evening at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening.
