Bertene Ellen Barger, 100, passed away peacefully Friday, November 30, 2007 at Rolling Green Village Care Center in Nevada, IA. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 3, 2007 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, IA with burial at Liberty Center Cemetery.

Bertene Ellen Fetters was born July 10, 1907 to Bert and Cora Fetters. She was the eldest of ten children. After graduating from Liberty Center High School, she married Kenneth Barger on June 19, 1927 and the couple lacked one month of celebrating their 77th wedding anniversary before Kenneth passed away in May of 2005. After living a short time in Fort Wayne, Indiana they returned to Iowa and farmed in Warren and Lucas Counties until 1954 when they moved the family to Nevada, IA.

She loved working in her yard and garden and was passionate about feeding her birds and squirrels. Her children and grandchildren will always remember Sparky, the baby squirrel that she hand fed, nursed back to health, and raised after it fell out of a tree in her yard.

Bertene was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, a daughter, Beverly Harriett and seven of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by a son, Gary Barger (Nola) of Nevada, IA, a daughter, Karaly Juhl (Donald) also of Nevada, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, all of whom she held close to her heart. She is also survived by a brother, Robert Fetters of Milo and a sister, Norma McKinney of Indianola, IA.

Bertene was always a caring, loving, and kind sister, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a wonderful cook and always expressed her love by wanting to feed and care for her family. She made the most wonderful pie crust and pies. Everyone loved her home-made egg noodles, chocolate chip cookies and donuts. She was a member of the Nevada Seventh-day Adventist Church and enjoyed working in the church's Community Services outreach ministry. Her Christ-like example, her spirit of forgiveness and thankfulness deeply touched her family, friends and those she came in contact with. She will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held prior to the services from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M.
