JOSEPH P. KIRVIN, Des Moines

Joseph P. Kirvin, age 78, died peacefully at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown on Sunday, December 21, 2008 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Joe was born on September 27, 1930 in Des Moines to Mary (Keeney) and John M. Kirvin and was a graduate of Dowling High School. He served in the Korean War, and worked for over 30 years for Polk County. Joe will always be remembered for his robust laughter, his work ethic, his generosity, and his love and devotion to his family and friends.

Survivors include his sister, Mary Elizabeth Kirvin-Johnson of Des Moines; his nieces: Cecelia Kirvin of Urbandale, Deanna Kibler of Des Moines, Cynthia (Biff) Renner of Ankeny, Patricia (Greg) Umthun of Granger, Marilyn Kirvin of Portland, Oregon, Susie Kirvin of Arvada, Colorado; and his nephews: Brian (Alene) Kirvin of Prole, Thomas (Connie) Kirvin of Urbandale, and David (Bridget) Kirvin of Las Vegas, Nevada. Joe is also survived by 15 great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John T. Kirvin and Donald F. Kirvin.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 26 with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 27 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, 1230 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Cumming, IA.
