June 9, 2004Velma (Young) Hunter, 80, of St. Marys died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services were held May 20, at the Methodist Church in New Virginia. Private burial will be at later date.
Mrs. Hunter was born on Jan. 10, 1924 in Des Moines, the daughter of William and Fern (Hines) Blackford. In 1942 she married John Young and they farmed for over 35 years in the St. Marys area. After her husband died in 1979 she worked as head cook at Norwalk Manor and as a caregiver from her home. In 1990 she married Don Hunter and had homes in Minnesota, Arizona and Texas. After his death in 1997, she resided with her daughter near St. Marys.
She loved to quilt and sew. She was a member of Methodist Church in New Virginia, Quilting Club in St. Marys and order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, John Young and Don Hunter; and brothers Harold, Jim and Glen.
Survivors include daughters Marilyn Herrick of St. Marys and Linda Young of Des Moines; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; sisters Marge Linsley and Maxine Norlin of Indianola and Helen Dutton of Osceola.
