CARL FLETCHER BROWN
Carl F. Brown, city clerk of Indianola, was born at Carlisle Dec. 12, 1880, the son of Fletcher and Ervilla (Holmes) Brown, His father was a Methodist minister. Carl graduated from Simpson college in 1903.
June 4, 1910, Mr. Brown married Nina Hohanshelt, daughter of William J. and Basha (Merrell) Hohanshelt. Mrs. Brown was born near Panora, Iowa. Her birthday falls on Dec. 25. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Brown: William Fletch- er, born April 13, 1912; Merrill Hohan- shelt, born June 4, 1914. Mrs. Brown was for many years instructor in education at Simpson college.
Mr. Brown served as auditor of Warren County from 1925 to 1935, and since April, 1937, he has been city clerk of Indianola. His father, the Rev. Fletcher Brown, served Simpson college as vice-president for six years and as president for five years. It was during his vice-presidency and presidency that Science hall, Mary Berry hall and two frame buildings were added to the physical plant of the college. When the construction program was started, the college had no credit and the Rev. Mr. Brown personally guaranteed the financial obligations. Mr. and Mrs. Brown live at 311 North D street, Indianola.
