CHARLES CLARENCE BRIGGS
Charles Clarence Briggs, oldest son of Lemuel Waterman and Mary Ann (Mosher) Briggs, was born June 17, 1870, on a farm near Grimes, Iowa, where his grandfather had settled in 1852. He attended college in Des Moines at Highland Park and Drake university. He went to Liberty Center where he taught school in the winter and farmed his mother's place in the summer.
On Jan. 1, 1897, at Indianola, he married Grace Barker, daughter of Joshua Hadley and Melissa Jane (Halloway) Barker. Mrs. Briggs was born at Liberty Center on Sept. 18, 1877. Three sons and two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Briggs: Leo Wendell, born Sept. 29, 1898; Viola M., born July 31, 1900; Earle Hadley, born June 25, 1902; Cecil Clair, born April 10, 1904; and Frances Maxine, born Feb. 22, 1907.
Charles C. Briggs wrote fire insurance for more than 40 years. For 12 years he was state adjuster for the Great American Insurance company. He was at one time mayor of Milo, and later held the same office in Indianola. He was justice of the peace for 38 years.
Mr. Briggs was a member of the Methodist church, the Rotary club, the chamber of commerce, the I.O.O.F.. In 1939 he was elected president of the Warren County Historical society. His maternal grandfather, Asa Mosher, was a pioneer settler of Warren County. Mr. Briggs was greatly interested in promoting temperance. His political ties were with the Republican party. Charles C. Briggs passed away June 10, 1947. Mrs. Briggs lives at 303 West Salem avenue, Indianola.
