GEORGE A. POWERS
George A. Powers was born Jan. 24, 1868, near Adelphi, the son of Frank and Miranda Smith Powers of pioneer stock. They later resided on a farm east of Carlisle near the Parmelee mill. His grandfather was Anthony Smith, who helped Parmelee in building the historic mill, and who died at old Dudley in 1861; and his grandmother was Rachel Freel Smith. His mother was related to the Parmelees, the first white family to settle permanently in Warren County. He attended the country schools of those days and worked on the farm. His sisters were Clara Beem, Minnie Corzatt and Nettie Barr.
In 1891 he married Anna Albertson of near Carlisle. To them were born seven children: Mrs. Mae P. Polson, at home; Mrs. Ethel P. Thomas, Des Moines; Blanche P. (d); Everett, who gave his life to his country, having been killed in action in France May 27, 1918, during World War I; Ray, Carlisle; Mrs. Ina P. Smith, who resides in Hawaii; and Glen of Indianola. There are 19 grandchildren: Keith Poison; Mrs. Phyllis Thomas; Wayne, Donald and Raymond Thomas; Mrs. Doris Senecaut; Allan Powers; Harlan, Shirley, Theodore, Jerry and Carry ( twins) Smith; Mrs. Juaneta Zeiler; George Jerry, Marylyn, Phillip and Douglas Powers; and Mrs. Glen McGee.
George Powers, the subject of this sketch, was neighborly and community minded. At the time of the organization of Carlisle P.M.C.K.S. unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, he was especially helpful and assisted his wife, a Gold Star Mother. by being ever ready with his car to give friendly encouragement and transportation to workers. He served as Warren County supervisor for several years. After a happy and industrious life of good citizenship, he departed this life Aug. 31, 1941, at the age of 73 years.
