ALICE EDNA OWENS
Alice Owens, postmaster of Carlisle 1935 to 1950, was born in Jasper county Feb. 6, 1875, the daughter of William F. and Mary D. Rice. She attended Drake University at Des Moines. Her marriage to Robert Walter Owens took place Oct. 14, 1896. Mr. Owens, the son of Hugh and Eliza Owens, was born in Ohio April 17, 1865. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Owens are: Florence A., born Feb. 15, 1898; Gordon E., born May 8, 1900; Mae M., born May 27, 1904; Winifred B., born June 5, 1908; Robert W., born Dec. 27, 1914.
In politics Mrs. Owens supported the Democratic Party and was the Democratic committeewoman for Warren County for several years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 89 in Des Moines, but later transferred her membership to the chapter at Carlisle. She was past matron and charter member of the Order of Eastern Star at Carlisle, and belonged to the Past Matrons club there. She was also a charter member of Mount Olivet White Shrine in Des Moines. Her religious affiliation was with the Church of Christ.
