JAMES WARNOCK LUNDY
James W. Lundy, former monument dealer of Indianola, was born at Palmyra Jan. 17, 1860. His father, Augustus A. Lundy, was born in Virginia and came to Warren County in 1857. His mother, Jane (Warnock) Lundy, was a native of Ohio. Mr. Lundy received most of his formal education at the Center school in Greenfield Township. He went to the Center school with his future wife, Anna Peverly, later went to school there to her as her pupil, still later he hired her as teacher of the school, he having become a school board member, and then married her Dec. 7, 1892. Mrs. Lundy was the daughter of Francis and Hannah (Dutton) Peverly, and was born at Whitehall, Ill., Sept. 4, 1857. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Lundy are Hugh Warnock Lundy, born Aug. 28, 1895, and Helen Kathryn Lundy, born Oct. 25, 1896.
Mr. Lundy was a partner with his brother, John Lundy, in a general store at Spring Hill, before moving to Indianola in 1898. He had a monument shop at Indianola and also one in Des Moines. He consolidated the Des Moines shop with the one at Indianola and operated it for over 50 years.
Mr. Lundy was a Jeffersonian Democrat. He saw every president of the United States from U. S. Grant to and including Harry S Truman. When a boy, he attended the North River church. At Indianola he attended the First Baptist Church regularly, and was treasurer of the Sunday school for over 40 years. He was a member of the Odd Fellows for more than 60 years and a member of the Masonic order for more than 50 years. In 1950 he was made an honorary member of the Rotary club and was awarded a 14-year perfect attendance button. For 17 years he was a member of the board of education at Indianola. For 30 years he was treasurer of Woodman. World fairs were of special interest to Mr. Lundy. He attended the fair at Chicago in 1894, Buffalo in 1901, St. Louis in 1904 and Seattle in 1910. Since 1879 he attended all of the Iowa State fairs except three. Mr. Lundy was an extensive farm owner and operator and owned a 321-acre farm in Greenfield township at the time of his death. His walnut grove in Middle river bottom is probably the finest in Iowa. Mr. Lundy died June 7, 1952.
