HOBART CARL HARGIS
H. C. Hargis, farmer of Greenfield Township, was born in Polk County June 29, 1896. He is a son of Zachary Taylor and Tacy Frances (Dowell) Hargis. Mr. Hargis is a descendant of early pioneer families of Warren County. His maternal grandfather, James W. Dowell, a native of Kentucky, came to Warren County in 1846. His paternal grandfather, H. C. Hargis, settled along the northern county line in 1856. Mr. Hargis owns and lives on the farm his grandfather Dowell entered from the government, which has never been out of the family and has never had a lien recorded against it.
Mr. Hargis received his formal education in the Elm Grove school in Polk County and the West High School in Des Moines. He married Mary Lucille Schooler, daughter of Edwin Peter and Mints (Fox) Schooler, Jan. 3, 1923. Mrs. Schooler was born at Indianola Jan. 20, 1903. Mr. and Mrs. Hargis have four children: Richard Edwin, born June 4, 1926; Bonnie Mae, born March 9, 1929; Howard Clinton, born July 14, 1939; Gary Taylor, born June 26, 1944.
During World War I Mr. Hargis was in the United States submarine service. He has been a trustee of Greenfield township 10 years and a school director for 20 years. He is a member of the American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He worships in the faith of the United Presbyterian Church, and in politics he supports the Republican Party.
