EMERSON B. CUMMINGS
Emerson B. Cummings, executive secretary of Soldiers Relief commission, lives at 1010 East Salem avenue, Indianola. He was born Jan. 29, 1893, the son of David and Frances Craig Cummings. His paternal grandfather, David D. Cummings, settled in the Scotch Ridge neighborhood in 1849. His maternal grandfather, the Rev. David Craig, was an early settler of Palmyra township. Mr. Cummings graduated from Indianola high school in 1911 and completed a business course at Simpson in 1914.
Aug. 24, 1940, he married Helen Louise Ritchart, daughter of John and Sadie Ritchart. Mrs. Cummings was born at New Virginia Dec. 25, 1908. From 1917 to 1925 Mr. Cummings coached at Knoxville. During World War I he served as instrument sergeant of Battery A, 69th Field artillery. From 1937 to 1944 he was deputy sheriff of Warren County. In 1949, when Warren County celebrated its centennial, Mr. Cummings was chairman of the centennial parade. At the time the new courthouse was dedicated in 1939, he and Gerald Houghtaling were in charge of the parade. Mr. Cummings belongs to the Masonic lodge and the American Legion. He was commander of Warren Post No. 165 in 1935-36, and county commander of the American Legion, 1937-38 and 194344. In his religious convictions he is a is Presbyterian, and his political ties are with the Republican Party.
