CHARLES N. BURROWS
Dr, Charles N. Burrows, professor in Trinity university, San Antonio, Texas, was born at Cameron, Mo., Jan. 20, 1894, the son of Henry E. and Ida Belle (Whitehead) Burrows. He received the degree of bachelor of arts from Missouri Wesleyan college; the degree of bachelor of systematic theology from the Boston university school of theology; the degree of master of arts from Harvard university; the degree of doctor of philosophy fro m the State University of Iowa.
Dr. Burrows married Sadie Louise Bryan June 8, 1919. Mrs. Burrows was born at Mooresville, Mo., Sept. 4, 1893, the daughter of W. C. and Scottie (Austin) Bryan. Jean Frances Burrows, who married Paul Herzig, is the only child of Dr. and Mrs. Burrows, and was born May 26, 1925.
From September, 1923, to Feb. 1, 1946, Dr. Burrows was chairman of the department of sociology at Simpson College, and now holds a similar position in Trinity university at San Antonio, Texas. From 1925 to 1939 he was also dean of men at Simpson college. In May, 1935, Dr. Burrows was elected president of the Iowa Association of Economists and Sociologists. In 1936 he was the organizing secretary of the Midwest Sociological society. From September, 1936, to July, 1937, he was on leave of absence from Simpson college, serving as forum leader with the adult public forums sponsored by the federal office of education. In this connection he served in Kansas, California, Texas, North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia. In the autumn of 1937 he organized and became the first chairman of the Indianola Council of Civic Agencies. In May, 1939, Dr. Burrows was elected president of the Iowa Association for Social Welfare. In 1944 he served as campaign fund chairman for the Warren County Red Cross drive. From 1924 to 1946 he was a member of the Indianola Rotary club and is a past president of the club. Dr. Burrows is a Methodist and an "independent" in politics.
