JAMES MAYES AMSBERRY
James Amsberry, merchant at Indianola, was born at Milo Dec. 25, 1904, son of Rolla D. and Mary L. Amsberry. He has a special interest in sports and as a young man played semiprofessional baseball. He was with the immortal Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig while they were on a barnstorming tour.
June 18, 1938, James Amsberry married Helen Loretta Lawyer, daughter of Harry and Carrie Lawyer. Mrs. Amsberry was born at Liberty Center Aug. 17, 1915. Priscilla, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amsberry, was born June 14, 1939.
Mr. Amsberry was with the Iowa State Highway patrol for five years. During the presidential campaign of 1944, he was assigned as a special guard to Gov. Thomas E. Dewey on his speaking tour through Iowa. In 1945 Mr. Amsberry opened a paint, glass and wallpaper store in Indianola - a business which he still operates on the north side of the public square.
Mr. and Mrs. Amsberry belong to the Methodist church. Fraternally he is affiliated with the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, belonging to Warren lodge. Des Moines Consistory and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. He is a member of the Izaak Walton league and the Indianola Chamber of Commerce of which he was president in 1952. His political ties are with the Republican Party. Mr. and Mrs. Amsberry live at 310 West Kentucky.
