“LITTLE JIM”
James S. Myrick was born on the 21st day of January, 1867, one mile northwest of Palmyra. His father, Andrew Myrick, was the second son of Elias Myrick, who settled here in 1846. His mother’s maiden name was Martha Jane Farley. She came to Palmyra township with the Farley’s in 1846. In the year 1871 when little Jim was four years old his parents moved to the state of Kansas where they resided for fifteen years, returning to Palmyra in 1886, a year later his father died. His mother passed away in the summer of 1903. Little Jim learned the harness maker’s trade at Wellington, Kansas, worked two years at Caldwell, Kansas. After his return to Palmyra he worked for Penn Sanders in the harness shop for awhile. In 1900 he went to Colorado where he remained for two years and then came back to old Palmyra, where he lived with his mother until she died last summer. As little Jim sat in his shop punching holes through leather and drawing waxed ends through the holes made by the awl, visions of old bachelors would loom up before him. He could see them grim, gaunt, grey and bald with tottering steps washing dishes and rattling frying pans. And no way could he find to ease his sad mind or drive those dark visions away but to propose to Miss Della McNatton. This he did, was accepted and they were united in marriage on the 8th day of July 1905 and ever since his face has been wreathed in smiles. In connection with his harness making and repairing shop, he carries on a restaurant where you can get a lunch or meal at any time, oysters, nuts and candies, hot coffee in winter and pop on ice in summer. Little Jim is not a member of the church. He trains and votes with the democrats and reads the A. T. If you want an oyster stew, a lunch, or a tug mended, give him a call and he will treat you right. [According to Washington Death Certificate 1907-1960 on FamilySearch.com, James Myrick died on January 22, 1932 in Seattle, King County, Washington, parents, Andrew Jackson Myrick and Martha Jane Forley]
