Ottumwa, Iowa Ottumwa Courier
September 05, 200 had a great article on our families.
Central addition was a community within Ottumwa that waged war against the Des Moines River every year. (for over 100 years)Family members met at this monument (WAYSIDAE PARK)for the families of this region. The momement consists of bricks taken from the location where we lived in Ottumwa's West end. On these bricks were the names like my James and Ollie Lanigan family, Anna & James Lanigan family, Tim Lanigan and Bessie Lanigan family, Jaquinate, Grimes, Van Buskirk, as well as Clark,Albertson, Hartley,Cook, Millhouse, De Grotte, Gilman, Rouncenville, Nevins, Jones, Sellwood, Adams, Cook,Bivens, Moffitt, Wilt, Hem, Burtlow,Fisher, just to name a few of these names on the bricks. The bricks were taken from the roads of my Pershing Ave, as well as Columbus, Leo, Lawrence, Mangan, Guggerty, Wiley, Zangs,Cable,Newton streets.(I recognize a lot of the street names to be names after surnames of early ottumwa west end) Names I have found mostly to be in Calvary Cemetery of Ottumwa and in the census of 1860-1870.I remember living on Pershing Avenue as a little girl and how the river came up into our house every single year! Also of this area was Hardsocg manufacturing Company,John Deer manufacturing, The Oil Mills, Lowenberg Bakery, Johnson Ruffler Works, to name a few. Lots of memories for us all!
